EFL Writing Connectors: FREE DOWNLOAD
It’s very important that students use link words and connectors in their writing in the ISE exam. They help students to produce more complex sentences, link their ideas and show the relationship between them. In this FREE DOWNLOAD you can find a list of some common connectors, sorted into different categories.
When students start to learn English, they produce simple utterances with no connection between them:
I don’t like going to the gym. I like playing tennis.
As their level increases, they need to start explaining the relationship between their ideas using a wide of range linkers and connectors:
I like playing tennis but I don’t like going to the gym.
Despite the fact that I don’t like going to the gym, I do like playing tennis.
Even though I don’t like going to the gym, I like playing tennis.
In this handy (and free!) download, there is a tableĀ of connectors that ISE I, ISE II and ISE III students might find useful for their writing. The connectors are separated into categories:
Addition: e.g. and, in addition
Contrast: e.g. however, on the other hand
Comparison: e.g. Similarly, equally
Cause and effect: e.g. Therefore, as a result
Giving examples: e.g. for instance, such as
Summarising: e.g. in summary, in conclusion
Time: e.g. at first, meanwhile
Emphasising: e.g. in particular, notably
Students often know one or two connectors from each category, but don’t use a wide enough range. We hope this will help them to widen their language use :)
